Low Carbon Building Program

The DTI's Low carbon building program will provide grants for microgeneration technologies for householders, community organisations, schools, the public sector and businesses.

Microgeneration is the stand alone generation of low carbon heat and/or electricity. One of the technologies covered is our Solar thermal hot water systems.

The program will run over three years, starting 1st April 2006 and replaces DTI's Clear Skies program. The program is UK wide and will demonstrate how energy efficiency and microgeneration will work hand in hand to create low carbon buildings.

There will is two streams of grants available:

bulletStream one - this applies to smaller projects for home owners, community groups and small to medium enterprise.
bulletStream two - this applies to larger projects which include larger businesses, community organisations and the public sector.
How much is the grant for Solar Thermal Hot water?

Stream 1 - Individual householders and small businesses.

bulletMaximum £400 regardless of size subject to an overall 30% limit (exclusive of VAT).

Stream 1 - Community

bulletGrants will be up to 50% of the capital and installation cost of the solar thermal hot water heating system. And is currently set at a maximum of £50,000. These grants will be awarded competitively.

How To Apply For A Grant.

Application forms will be available from 24th April 2006.  We will publish details as soon as possible.

There are a number of energy efficiency measures that you must undertake before you are eligible to apply for a grant under the low carbon buildings program.

  1. A minimum of 270mm of loft insulation
  2. installed cavity wall insulation (if you have cavity walls)
  3. using low energy light bulbs in all appropriate light fittings
  4. installed basic controls for your heating system to include a room thermostat and a programmer or timer.
