Solar Hot Water & solar PV/Wind Energy System Installation
At Holywell Community Garden

Holywell Community Garden is an allotment site,
worked and enjoyed by a variety of community organizations, including
school children and people with disabilities based in Watford, England.
Heavens Solar Technology were asked to recommend a suitable
renewable energy system to reduce the energy consumption in the modular building
on the allotment site.
Energy Consumption
The modular building is powered my mains electricity and the
areas of consumption are:
 | Hot Water heated by means of wall mounted electric
storage heaters
 | The building contains two toilets with wash hand
basins, a kitchen area and a changing room with wash hand basin. |
|
 | Lights
 | Florescent strip lighting approximately 16 in
number. Because of the design of the building with it's small
windows, very little natural sun light enters the building so
these lights are on during the time it is occupied, around five
hours a day. |
|
 | Space heating
 | The building is heated using several 2Kw wall
mounted electric heaters, used mainly in winter. |
|
As with all projects, budget was the main factor in deciding
how much of the energy consumption would be replaced by renewable. it was
decided that we would look at providing solar thermal technology for heating the
water and a combination of wind energy and photovoltaic (PV) to provide
electricity based on the lighting requirements.
Solar Hot water Installation Servicing Modular Building
 | Heavens Solar Technology supplied and installed
Solartwin, located and secured onto existing flat roof via a purpose
made cradle securely fastened to existing structure and made water
tight using suitable flashing details.
 | Due to the hardness of the water supply in the
area it was necessary to install an indirect system in order to
comply with the manufacturers warranty. |
|
 | Necessary primary, secondary and ancillary plumbing
installations including:
 | Softwood open framework to carry storage tanks. |
 | Large and small header tanks servicing hot water
cylinder and solartwin system. |
 | Indirect pre-lagged hot water storage cylinder. |
 | Copper pipe work to run to each wash hand basin. |
 | At each wash hand basin an Altecnic Mixcal
caremix blending valve was installed as a safety measure to guard
against very hot water temperatures at the tap on summer days. |
|
The building does not have a loft area to house the header
tank or cylinder, however there is a spare room so we constructed a purpose
built "airing cupboard" to allow visitors see how the system works as
well as having the practicality of solar heated water.
Solar PV And Wind Energy System Installation Servicing
Modular Building
 | Heavens Solar Technology supplied and installed the
following:
 | 4 X ridged solar module 180 Watts peak power each
totaling 720W peak. |
 | 2 X 12v wind turbines totaling an average of 800
watts. |
 | Solar/wind 12v 1100w combi regulator unit. |
 | 4 X 200Ah deep cycle batteries, total storage
capacity 800Ah @ 12v |
 | Purpose made frame to hold solar panels.
Construction of external battery store. |
|
By combining both wind and solar technology the system had the
best of both worlds. During mid summer when the sun is shining at it's best
there would only be a slight breeze and the panels would produce most of the
energy, typically, when the skies cloud over the wind picks up, this is when the
wind turbines come in to their own. And of course during the night the batteries
will be topped up using wind energy.
