The solar cell, the heart of solar electricity generation, converts the energy from the sun’s rays into electric current.  Solar cells are made of silicon, a naturally occurring element in the earths crust.  The silicon is processed into so-called semi-conductors, which become electrically conductive under the influence of heat or light.  Because of this, an electrical voltage of about 0.5 volts can be taken from the individual solar cells when exposed to sunshine.  When many such cells are connected in series, they become powerful solar modules.
